Between work, Christmas, swaps, bees & home my to-do list for is quite frighteningly large at the moment. I made 3 lists today on my white board – one for home, one for work & one for my blog/bees/personal sewing. I have not even got to the Chistmas list yet and I’m already thinking “wowser… no wonder my brain was feeling cluttered!”…
But despite all this I made the executive decision that since it’s my birthday this week, I’m going to treat myself to working on something all.for.me…
Because it so rarely (if ever) happens otherwise, and I think that my birthday is definitely a viable & worthy excuse
So yesterday I got out the 32 cheeky blocks that I already have and decided to get started with prepping them….
First step – adding some extra logs to about half of them so that they all measured over 15 inches square.
Out came the scrap bin and my pile of scrappy strips…
|No hassling me about my glass of water right next to my fabric – I only just noticed it LOL….|
Next my helper & I spray basted them out on our deck…
|I couldn’t be more in love with how they are all looking together!|
Which brings us to the days finale…
32 blocks sitting basted on my desk all ready to be quilted.
As you can see I decided to flag the long arm idea & go with quilt as you go straight line quilting. Straight line quilting really seams to be working for me at the moment so I think I’ll stick with it. Still undecided on exactly how to quilt them though. Want to stick with something quite quick to do so that this quilt doesn’t take me 10 years to complete, since I have 49 blocks to quilt & all!!
I also made another special block to add on behalf of a bee/blog friend. This is “Leona’s block” even though it’s made by me… Leona & I have become good friends first through my Sew & Bee-Happy bee and then through a number of personal swaps. Leona is generous beyond words and she has almost single handedly supplied my stash with all it’s out of print exclusive designer prints.
So I decided to make this block out of scraps & prints that either Leona has sent me, or one of which I have sent her. It could have probably done with some more vibrancy in terms of colour but at least I will always have warm feelings when I look at it
At the end of the day I then tidied up sorted out all my scraps. I decided to be ruthless & get rid of a huge bag full of scraps I didn’t think I’d ever use, either because I’m really not fond of them or because they are just too teeny tiny.
I don’t know about you but I find it so hard to get rid of any scrap of fabric. However, there does get to a point where it ceases to really become useful so I just had to do the hard thing and part with them…
(Ok so I confess I still actually have them – I just couldn’t bin fabric! So I’ve kept them for kids crafts LOL….)
My huge pile of scrappy strips shrunk a bit after adding strips to blocks & making a few more today, but certainly nobody could say I was just about out of them!
Maybe another scrap giveaway will be on the cards when this project is all done & dusted 😉
So I made good progress today I feel on a project for me for a change! It feels great to be getting closer to completing this.
Now just to decide how to quilt it and get started on the quilting….
PS if you are interested in making a block towards this quilt then there are still 8 block spaces available. So let me know & I’ll hold you a spot & send you my deets.
I’d be really thrilled to have one from you!
